Final music video

Production Log (week 9)

During this week my partner and I have had to get all of the gaps filled that was missing from our music video as on the Wednesday 18th of march was our deadline day, throughout the week my partner and I would film Aaron's shots during lunch and also film Kori's shots during our free periods so that when it came to the deadline lesson we had more than enough shots to fill in the gaps. During the deadline lesson as my partner and I was practically finished in the previous lessons we did not have to stay behind after class as we had finished and showed our teacher our finally piece at around 3:15, when she then said that it was fine and we can export it.

During this week we faced little to no problems as everything was fine and my partner and I knew what we needed to do for the following lessons so that we would not fall behind, or not get our music video in on the day of the deadline. From there being no problems we did not have to overcome anything, or fix anything.

During next weeks lesson the class will start to explore the constraints on a music video and how they apply to our music video production, from this we will have two pieces of coursework witch consist of Codes Of Practise & Regulation Grid and also Research log, this was explained to use by our teacher and we was also told that these should be completed simultaneously as if we do one and decide to do the other later we could fall behind.

Weekly Production Log (week 8)

During this week my partner and I were putting this finishing touches to our music video, for example adding in the effects of black and white also adding in transitions like fading and cross dissolve.

Our teacher said that there were not a lot of shots that had to be changed and that we are on the right path with the music video and the shots that we have added in and the locations.During last lesson my partner and I managed to finish our live type (graphics) and add them into the music video to also fill in the gaps that we previously had.

The problems that occurred during this week was still the cutting to the beat however there was only a few shots that was not cutting to the beat. The way my partner and I overcame this problem was that once we had made the changes to the cutting to the beat we would ask our teacher to check to see if it was all on the same beat instead of being on different beats.

During next week my partner and I are planning to make sure all the gaps that we had a filled and to also make sure that all of the shots are in sync and are all in right timing with the actual song it self, my partner and I are also going to make sure that all of the shots are in the right place and that the transitions are where they need to be, also next week my partner and I plan to start our evaluation as next week is our deadline week.

Weekly Production Log (week 7)

During this week my partner and I were still editing the footage that we have we also planned when we was going to film the shots that we had to add into the music video. Whilst editing my partner and I discussed what we was going to add into the blanks of the music video and also discussed when we was going to film and what we was going to re-shoot, also whilst editing we saw that some bits of Kori rapping were out of time to the music because he said the words to fast this also means that we will have to re-film those parts as well as filing in the gaps so that the music video looks quite professional.

The problems that we faced whilst continuing to edit was that we was not cutting to the same beat throughout the music video and also that we still had a few blank spaces that need to be filmed before the next few lessons so that we could have all the footage ready so that we can fix it and make the music video perfect to a professional standard.

To overcome these problems in the next couple of weeks my partner and I have decided to start from the beginning verse of the song and stop on every base beat and then make sure that the next shot would be on the screen when you hear that beat, the way we would do this is that my partner would stop the song when ever he hears the beat (as he plays the drums) I would then make changes so that the next shot would then come on the screen. To overcome the problem of filming my partner and I will film throughout the lessons to make sure we have more than enough shots so we can add extra shots if needed.

My partner and I plan to film and continue editing throughout next weeks lesson so that we can resolve the problems from this week this should then give us enough time to perfect the scenes that we have currently got and to also add and perfect the other shots that we plan to do.

Weekly Production Log (week 6)

During this week my partner and I have been editing our music video and putting in the shots where they are supposed to go and also seeing what shots will need to be re-done as they may not be in time with the music video.

Whilst editing my partner and I realised were there were gaps in the footage for were we have to film again for us to have the draft ready for our teacher and class to watch on Thursday, also during editing we started to put the effect of black and white on our shots, which was done by using colour desaturate, also on the beginning and end shot there is a video transition that makes the video shake whilst it plays, which my partner and I thought looked quite good as it went with the type of atmosphere of the music video.

During the following weeks my partner and I will be adding in more shots and also adding in more effects to the music video to make it look more realistic and will then give it a more professional look. The problems that occurred whilst filming is that we realised that some of the shots that we had shot of Kori when he was rapping and Aaron when he was rapping were both out of time to the original song.

My partner and I overcame these problems by in class re filming Kori's shots and also adding in more shots incase other shots did not fit in with the atmosphere, we also had to re film Aaron's shots and we done this at lunch as we could not take him out of class.

Weekly Production Log (week5)

During this week my partner and I have been filming to complete all the shots for our music video, and also add extra shots in case some shots are not what my partner and I expected, whilst filming there was a slight problem as the car park that we initially wanted to film in said that they no longer allow filming in the car park due to security and safety reasons, this then meant that me and Kori had to improvise with what we was going to add instead on the car park shots, we then decided to add extra shot of the park and the underpass and also shots of Kori walking.

Also during this week I helped out other groups from my class by being an actress in there music video the people that I helped were, Connor and Jack, Kesean and Jamie and finally Darren, Omar and Yannick.

This week has been quit challenging as I have had to direct and film my partner and my music video and then also help other people film there's and I didn't not want to let anyone down as i had already agreed to participate in there music video.

For the following week my partner and I will start to edit and also re-shoot some scenes that we think will need to be redone. Whilst we are editing the footage we have Kori will also be making the fonts on Live type so that we can have everything in place first so that we have a rough draft of the music video, so then we can ask the teacher what we should improve or re shoot or change, and then finish it off to professional quality.

Also during this week my partner and I tried to stick to the production log as much as possible however as the weather changed from raining to the sun being out we had to re shoot some of the shots so that it looks the same throughout the music video as the days were supposed to be the same.

Weekly Production Log (Week 4)

During this week my partner and I finished off all of the pre-production work, which meant that we could start filming on Wednesday during lesson in the studio in school, as this was a lesson the studio was free to use and there was no interruptions.

This then put us ahead of schedule as we have done some of the shots during our lesson and will also be filming during Fridays lesson as well. In our production schedule (This can be found on blog post Production Schedule) we decided to try and get the music video shots done by Monday, this can be done because most of the shots are in the same place which then means that they have to be done on the same day so that the weather has not changed and also so that the actor has not changed clothes.

This then  gives my partner and I more time to re-shoot, and also gives me more time to help other groups with there music video as I have agreed with them to take part in it. The problems that we faced whilst filming was that people would walk by in the shots which then meant that we had to re film the same shot or wait for the people to walk by, apart from that there was no problems that we face. Next week my partner and I plan to film and re shoot some shots that need to be done, I also need to help other groups that I agreed to help be in and ect.

Below are pictures of our group filming.

Waiver For Cast

Weekly Production Log (week 3)

During this week my partner and I have started our pre production which included doing things like - Production schedule, which is were we had to put were and when we was filming and what we filling out and also when we have to re-shoot and edit. Permission to film, which is were we had to wright a blog post on were we was filming and if we needed permission to film then and if we did not then why (This can be looked at on the blog post Permission To Film).

Job roles and Responsibilities, this is where my partner and I discussed who would do what jobs this was also completed individually, theses were the job roles Camera Operator & editor, Director & Production Manager (This can be looked at on the blog post Job roles and Responsibilities) and finally the Waiver For The Cast, this is where we had to get permission from the cast to film and be apart of our music video and this was done as a pair.

Also during the week I had to take pictures of locations that my partner and I would be using to put in the blog post Location Reccies and a few of the pictures that I used were the church the street and the school. Another thing that happened this week was our media class had a trip to the BBC & BBFC this was a good trip as we had the opportunity to see how the regulate films and also were the news is filmed and were the one show is also filmed. There was no problems during the pre-production as we spoke about what we was going to write before we began to write.

Below are pictures of the things I have mentioned in this weekly production log.

Location Reccies

Underpass

In our music video we will be filming in an underpass in romford near the market there was also another underpass that i was thinking about using that was in Gants Hill but i decided not use that underpass because it was a bit to far for people in the muic video to travel. The underpass in romford will be filmed at night because it will add a dull and lonely mood to the song, as the underpass has bad lighting, due to the song being slow and not about good things that occurred in the artists life like " begging for money in primary school ", and not being able to find the true meaning of life this is a good location for the music video to be filmed. As the underpass is a public place it is very easy for access which shows that it is practical. The benefits for filming in an underpass is that it is adding the effect to the music video of loneliness and depression, however the drawbacks to filming in the underpass is that different people could walk past the shots which would mean that we would have to film more that 1 time to get the correct shot.

Car Park

In our music video we will be filming in a car park that is next to Romford market as it is close for all of the actors however the other potential car park was the westfields but it had to much lighting so it did not have the effect that i was looking for. This will be filmed at night because the lighting will add the effect of sadness and depression due to the darkness and flickering of the lights, this then adds to the mood of the song as it shows that he has grown up in and is still in a world that he does not like for example when he says in his lyrics "were living in a world that's scandalous", the benefits for using this location is that it is public so we do not need permission to film there also it adds the effect to the music video that me and my partner are looking for, however the downfall is that there could be a lot of cars and then if we have to shoot it again the same cars may not be there.

Park

In our music video we will be filming in a park in Romford because it is close however the other park I could have used is St Chads but they shut to early for the shots that we would like to use. The reason why we have chosen to use a park is because this will add a more urban look to the music video when we will be showing shots of graffiti which will then shows the artists urban statues throughout the music video. The benefits of this location is that it is public and we can get a lot of good shots done there of the artist looking lonely, however the downfall is that there could be people trying to get in the shot or also different people in a shot that is supposed to be the same.

Church

In our music video we will be filming in outside a church this is because it will add an effect to the music video of him being religious and wanting to forget what he has done and seen in the past for example when he says "i used to go church every Sunday". The benefits of this location is that it is public and open location as it is on the street and we are not going in to the church however a downfall can be that people keep walking in and out of the shot and if we are doing the same shot in different angles then it would look weird as people will be in and out of different shots.

School

In our music video we will be filming in school this is because my partner and I go to this school so it is easy to film here. We have decided to film here because it will show his life when he was younger and how was living his life as a child which in his lyrics seems like he did not have a good life and he still does not have as good as a life as he would like. The benefits of this location is that it is the school that we go to so we do not need permission, however the downfall is that the children that we want to be in the shot may mess around and also other children may keep getting into the shots when there not supposed to.

Romford Market

In our music video we will be filming in Romford market which is near to the other locations however the other potential market is Roman Road however that is quite far for the cast to travel. We have chosen to film here because, there are a lot of people walking there during the day and the shot that we will have will add the effect that the artist is alone in his own world and he does not have anyone and no one is paying any mind to him. The benefits of this location is that it is public and it is also local so it is in walking distance from the actors that are in the music video, however a downfall could be that there may not be a lot of people walking past on that day which would then mean that we would have to go and film on another day.

Studio

In our music video we will be filming in a studio because it is in our school and we do not have to pay for one however another potential one is my brothers however he lives in southend and it is a bit far to travel. We have chosen to film here because, this shows that the artist is trying to do something with his life rather than being like everyone else for example "black boys acting like savages" this shot then shows that he does not want to be like the typical black boy he wants to stand out. The benefits of this shot is that it is easily accessible as the studio is in our school and also we just have to ask a teacher for the keys, however a downfall could be that the actor may not be able to film on the day that we need which then means that we would have to film on another day.

Street

In our music video we will be filming in a alleyway & the streets in Romford near the market this is because it is close however the other potential location was the alleyway that is in Chadwell Heath however we decided not to use that one as there was a few gangs around there. We decided to film in this place, because this shows that the artist is lonely and depressed and you can see this during the intro and outro of our music video. The benefits of this location is that it adds the effect of the artists urban statues, that me and my partner are adding to, however a downfall could be that people would be walking in and out of the shots.

Permission to film

In our music video we do not need permission to film in any of our locations as we will be filming in locations such as an ally way, car park, park, underpass and on the streets and these are all public locations not private property so we do not have to ask permission to film in these locations however if we were filming in a church we would need to ask for permission as it is private and we would probably have needed to go to that church to get permission to film there. This then means that when we need to re shoot anything we do not then have to get permission again to re shoot as it is a public place so we can then re shoot and film at any time on any day, this will also be easier as when we want to film we can, we do not have to wait for a reply to see if we can film in some of the locations that we have chosen.
I have found a quote from the Film London website which says the following - The BFS will be able to:
  • Let you know where you need permission to film
  • Inform you of potential filming hotspots – or of anything going on in the area that may disrupt your filming
  • Advise you on whether or not you need to contact the local police
The BFS stands for the  Borough Film Services

On this page they also say that it is free to film in public places and do not need
permission.

Job roles & Responsibilities

Monique Director & Production Manager
In this music video my role is going to be director and production manager, the responsibilities I will be responsible for is -
Making sure that all of the cast and crew are available
Making sure that we are doing the right shots and shot types
Making sure that there are no conflicts between the cast and crew
Making sure the actors are wearing the right clothing ( continuity )
Making sure any props that are needed have been bought
Keeping tabs on shooting script

The reason why I would be suitable for this role is because it is my music video and I know exactly how I want it to look.  I can control certain situations for example if someone did not turn up I could work around there time frame I am also quite organised so I can prevent any mishaps or any misunderstandings during filming. This role is also suitable for me as I can take charge during the filming and tell people what they should be doing and what shots they should be doing and also how they should act in the shots, as the director I also tell the camera operator what shots to put the camera in and also what movement to do with the camera. Kori will be the camera operator and editor as he has experience with using the camera and he knows how to put the camera into the different shot types and movements. There are no other cast members in the music video as the music video is supposed to portray the feeling of loneliness and growing up into a better person, and this only requires two people.

Weekly Production log (week 2)

During this week me and Kori had been creating our music video script and on Friday we managed to finish off the script with the colour coordination. The way that me and Kori decided to do the script was that I would do the beginning and he would do the end so it worked out that I was doing the Intro, Verse 1 and the course and he done Verse 2, course and the outro so we both had equal amount to do.

Once we had both finished our parts I checked both of ours to make sure that it made sense and once that was done Kori then sent me his part and i put them together to make one big script. Throughout the week there has been no big problems as Kori asked me for help if he needed it and we both finished the script at the same time.

My plans for the following week are to hopefully start filming so that we would have more time to reshoot anything if need be and also so that we have more time to edit. Below is images of the full script that has been colour coded for the different locations that has been selected. The problems that we faced whilst doing the scripts was that we was doing two separate parts so it was hard to no what shot the other person had finished on, however when we combined the scripts it was easy to figure out what shots needed to be changed and how to make it look like it was all one script.

Music Video Script

Sunday, 25 January 2015

Weekly Production Log (week 1)

During this week I have finished performing my pitch ( The video to this is also in my blog under the name Pitch Reflection )to the class this was so that when it came to choosing partners everyone knew who they have an idea of who they would want to work with for there music video, and also I have chosen who I want to work with for this music video project, I also made a video with my partner speaking about why we have decided to work with each other and why we would work well together ect.

The person that I have chosen to work with is Kori because he is reliable and we have easy access to each other ect. This fits in with the job roles as me and Kori discussed who would be doing what jobs and why for example I am the director as we decided to use my music video as I know how the music video is supposed to look and how the script will be for example what will happen in the intro and outro ect, this also fits in with the overall idea of the project as our music video ideas were quite similar so we also used some things that was in Kori's music video.

There was no problems that came up as it was easy to decide who's music video to do as there was more things to come up with in the music video script. My plans for the following week are to start and finish the music video script so that me and Kori have more time to shoot the shoots and also re-shoot shots if needed, also me and Kori will decide what shots we need and what shots we do not need to add into the music video script.

This is what me and my partner had to speak about during our short video.

This is also the short video of me and kori explaining why we decided to work together.

Pitch Reflection

My presentation

PowerPoint

Q&A

Questions
In my presentation I believe that I could have explained the creativity in my idea's more than I did and how original it was for example when I spoke about the conventions that I was going to use I did not think that I explained it as well as I should had and this meant that whilst I was answering the questions that the audience gave me I had to explain it in more detail so that they had more of an understanding of what I wanted my music video to look like. In my music video I think that I gave enough detail on how practical my ideas were as I explained how we would get to certain places and how I would coupe if something came up for example if one of my actors could not make it I would work around them so that we can film on the days that they can do. In my idea's about my music video I think that I could have given more detail about technicality, for example I spoke about varied camera language and different shot types but I felt like i cold have spoken more about where and when in my music video that I would use this and also how I would use this. In my PowerPoint I believe that I should have explained music video theory for example conventions and Goodwin in more detail because when I was explaining it I felt that it was quite vague in the way that I described which types of conventions that I would be using.

The strengths that the audience identified were that my target audience and interests for the target audience were appropriate the audience also agreed that the conventions that I was planning to use for example performance was good for my music video as they can visually see what the artist is like and also how they act. The audience thought that the practicality of my ideas were good as they could be done easily and without any problems they also thought that the creativity of my idea was good for example when i spoke about one of the lyrics (I learnt how to survive in year 5 ...) I said that I would have a shot of a child hustling for lunch money the audience agreed that i should have done this as they would then be able to visually see what the artist is rapping about.

The improvements that the audience identified were that instead of doing the whole of the chorus in the school studio to do it in the studio but have cuts to graffiti to get the atmosphere as alone and that they do not have anyone to go to ect. I also had another comment where Chloe asked if I would be able to expand on my locations instead of just using the studio and the backstreets this gave me time to think about what other locations i could possibly use throughout my music video to make it more interesting.

The changes that I would make due to the feedback I received are to add some more locations and also to have the cut away to the graffiti to also add to the atmosphere and the type of genre that I am doing I would also think about having in the 1st verse having the artist as a young person and then in the 2nd verse him being an adult and seeing the world as it is now and how it has not changed for him ect.

Creating artists identity

Name - Black The Ripper ( Dean West )

Record Label - Self Signed Black Magic Entertainment

Song - Let Out My Pain

Information - Lives in London, his music is inspired by historical and often political figures such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, he is a hip hop and grime artist.

Colours and typography associated with them - Black, Blue, Red, White & Green

These have been chosen because they are soft not sharp and the way that he raps is not harsh its soft but the truth and also the type of typography that i have chosen goes with the slow and calm. Theses are the types of colours and typography that I have chosen for my artist as black is representing the bad things that have happened throughout his life, the red is representing the death and blood he has seen throughout his life and finally the white is representing how he is trying to be a changed man and not sin anymore and try to do the best for him and his family.

Mise-en-scene which would feature in music video

These are being used because the song is quite sad and dark so it makes the lyrics more explosive to the audience this also adds effect during the music video as it adds the type of effect of sadness and loneliness. These have also been used as during the music video it will represent what the artist is trying to portray to the audience about the world that we are living in and what people do or do not do to help.

Clothing

These are being used as they are the typical type of clothing you see on a rapper and in my music video i would like to go for more of the urban look to create more of an atmosphere when shooting the music video, so that the audience can visually see what the artist is like and how he acts in the music video.

Who I would have play the rapper

The reason why I have chosen Michael is because his styles and characteristics are similar to a rapper and also because of his ethnicity he also dresses similar to the way that I want to make the artist look so it will be easy to access clothes and trainers as he already has the type of clothing needed for my music video.
